XL Aviation’s UPRT program has been developed to provide pilots with high-quality training that mitigates against the threat of inflight loss of aircraft control. Loss of Control – Inflight (LOC-I) refers to accidents in which pilots are unable to maintain control of an aircraft while in flight, resulting in an unrecoverable deviation from the intended flight path. Between 2001 and 2011, over 40 percent of fixed-wing GA fatal accidents occurred because pilots lost control of their airplanes.

The lethality of LOC-I, coupled with our belief that its occurrence can be reduced through improved skills, make this training fundamentally imperative. Upon completion of UPRT, graduates will possess the necessary skills to prevent, recognize, and recover from aircraft upsets.

Program Overview

XL Aviation offers two UPRT courses:

  1. UPRT Initial Training
    • includes four academic sessions and four training flights over two days
  2. UPRT Recurrent Training
    • includes two academic sessions and two training flights during one day

Each course features integrated training, including academic instruction and in-flight advanced maneuver and upset recovery training.

Our training aircraft, the Extra 300, is ideal for exploring advanced handling characteristics and all-attitude flying. Due to its vast operating envelope, the Extra 300 is uniquely capable of simulating flight within, and beyond, the limitations of any standard category general aviation light aircraft.
